Munich, May 7th, 2025 – Accelerating the European Energy Transition at Intersolar Europe 2025
At Intersolar Europe 2025, Anker SOLIX hosted its flagship Roundtable at Messe München, bringing together leading voices from the renewable energy sector to address a crucial challenge: accelerating the green energy transition and making reliable, affordable energy accessible for all.
The session opened with Daniel Fuchs, Chief Customer Officer at EUPD Research, presenting the latest data on Germany’s plug-in and balcony PV storage market. In 2024 alone, over 506,000 plug-in PV systems (up to 2kW) were installed, with projections for 2025 rising to approximately 675,000 new systems. These figures represent a significant move, with balcony and plug-in systems expected to account for over 8% of Germany’s residential PV capacity by the end of 2025.
Enabling policies—such as regulatory changes that allow tenants to install balcony PV without landlord permission—now give nearly half of German households a direct pathway into the energy transition. The study also highlighted the value of pairing PV with storage, enabling self-consumption rates as high as 94%.
Hans-Josef Fell, President of the Energy Watch Group and a global energy transition leader, joined Anker SOLIX CEO Shaun on stage. Both emphasized the urgent need for a rapid shift to 100% renewables, citing the climate emergency and the risks of energy insecurity. Decentralized energy systems like balcony solar-plus-storage are seen as critical for providing resilient and affordable power, especially amid grid interruptions or crises—as witnessed recently in Germany, Spain, Ukraine, South Africa, Nigeria, and the U.S.
Despite supportive policies and approximately €60 billion in public investments across Europe in 2023, market penetration has not kept pace with targets. Shaun discussed remaining barriers: high upfront costs (with traditional residential systems still costing €15,000–20,000), long payback periods, complex installation and sales processes, and heavy dependency on subsidies, which, when reduced, can slow market growth severely.
Another important point: for many consumers, especially outside the wealthiest households, the complexity and cost mean the decision to choose residential solar is difficult—even though policy incentives and innovation are helping.
Responding to these challenges, Anker SOLIX is focusing on:
The roundtable concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration and driving regulatory and technological innovation. With continued effort, supportive policy, and industry partnership, Europe is well-positioned to accelerate a sustainable, decentralized energy future.
Anker SOLIX welcomes partners and stakeholders to join our mission—empowering every individual and community to benefit from sustainable energy.
