Anker unveils the smallest 30W charger yet: The PowerPort Atom PD 1

The Atom is comparable in size to a stock phone charger, but is able to power a laptop

New York, NEW YORK - October 25, 2018 - Anker, the leader in mobile charging technology, launched today the smallest wall charger capable of fast-charging portable gaming consoles, smartphones, tablets, and laptops. The charger, dubbed the Anker Powerport Atom PD 1, is the first charger on the market to use Gallium Nitride (GaN) components. This makes the device slimmer, lighter, and more efficient than conventional wall chargers.

“Traditional chargers use silicon components which are bulky and are not very efficient, wasting close to 20% of total potential power through heat emission when charging a USB device,” explained Steven Yang, CEO of Anker Innovations, “Anker has worked for the last 12 months developing GaN technology in order to provide chargers that not only lower power inefficiency, but also considerably reduce the size of the charger.”

Tiny, but powerful

The most attractive thing about the Atom is its size, with a body slightly bigger than a 5W stock smartphone charger and weighing only 2.2 oz, the Atom is small enough to comfortably fit in your front pocket. It features one single USB-C port capable of dispensing up to 30W of power using the Power Delivery standard, enough wattage to charge the Nintendo Switch™ or even a MacBook™.

Thank you Silicon, it’s been a great run

Silicon components have been a big piece of the rapid evolution of mobile technology in the last 30 years. However, due to high resistance and less efficient conductivity, these components heat up quickly, which wastes energy and lowers net charging speed.

Gallium Nitride has come to change all that. This compound is already essential to modern satellites and radars but when it comes to consumer electronics, GaN can help reduce the size of components inside phones, tablets, and laptops, leading to a marked increase in battery life.

“I think that within the next 5 years, electronics companies will leave Silicon behind and will shift to GaN components,” said Yang. “We’ve had a great run with Silicon, but it’s time to move onto something better.”

The PowerPort Atom PD 1 will be available on Amazon US at the end of November for $29.99.
